Anomalous fermion number violation and numerical simulations
After discussing the problem of lattice regularization of chiral gauge theories, a simple model for anomalous fermion number violation is formulated which can be numerically studied with present day technique. Exploratory results of numerical simulations of a two-dimensional U(1) Higgs model are presented.
متن کاملFermion production despite fermion number conservation
Lattice proposals for a nonperturbative formulation of the Standard Model easily lead to a global U(1) symmetry corresponding to exactly conserved fermion number. The absence of an anomaly in the fermion current would then appear to inhibit anomalous processes, such as electroweak baryogenesis in the early universe. One way to circumvent this problem is to formulate the theory such that this U(...
متن کاملFermion Number Fractionization
Solitons emerge as non-perturbative solutions of non-linear wave equations in classical and quantun theories. These are non-dispersive and localised packets of energy-remarkable properties for solutions of non-linear differential equations. In presence of such objects, the solutions of Dirac equation lead to the curious phenomenon of ‘fractional fermion number’, a number which under normal cond...
متن کاملFermion Number Violation and a Two-dimensional Higgs Model
The investigation of topological properties of the gauge field in a two-dimensional Higgs model can help in understanding anomalous fermion number violation. 1. A simple model for fermion number violation Fermion number, which is the sum of baryon number and lepton number (B+L), is not conserved in the Standard Model 1. This is due to the anomaly in the fermion current. The lattice formulation ...
متن کاملSolitons with Integer Fermion Number
Necessary and sufficient conditions are found for any object in 3+1 dimensions to have integer rather than fractional fermion number. Nontrivial examples include the JackiwRebbi monopole and the already well studied Su-Schrieffer-Heeger soliton, both displaying integer multiples of elementary charges in combinations that normally are forbidden.
